In 1975 when I first went to Rangoon, you used to buy a bottle of Johnny Walker and a carton of 555 cigarettes in Bangkok and sell them to the taxi driver who took you from the airport - which gave you just about enough money to spend a week travelling through Burma! Are whiskey and cigarettes still a useful currency in Myamar?
