would love to travel to myanmar!

Hello,

This year my husband and I are thinking of traveling to Myanmar on a private tour with Bales. I have been reading about the fors and against reasons and understand that a trip to this country should not be taken lightly. We have traveled around Vietnam,Cambodia, Laos and Thailand and would love to travel to Myanmar next. Can anyone put our minds at rest? Our main concern is - Is it safe to travel there with the situation? and can anyone give us any travel advice?

Thank you.

Hi,

If you%26#39;ve been to all the countries above, then I think Myanmar is fine.

My husband and I did notice the difference in how our drivers ';reacted'; when we saw some military officers, etc...they seemed to be more wary and more alert and not as relaxed as they%26#39;d be with us once it was just us and them.

Having said that, in your list of SEA countries, I haven%26#39;t been to Laos yet, but I find the Burmese the NICEST in SEA. Not the military/junta/etc, but the locals. I was very touched as we had met this local guy and he actually invited us to his home for a meal - in Myanmar! They can get into trouble for things like that, but he had a very big heart, and we found many people like that....

Thank you very much for your replies Italiangirl1 and Jade_du!!

Hi,

I am from Burma. It made me think that who gave you the wrong information after reading your message. I understand about your concern. But, Burma is the safest place to travel alone compare to Cambodia and Thailand. Hyper Safe. You do not need to speak our language to get around. Everyone you see on the street will offer you help with a big smile if you ever get lost or need help. Lovely place to visit.

Hello newstead,

My husband and I have just been 14 days in beautiful Myanmar. We made our own travel arrangements (through a local agency - which strangely enough - is the way you get the cheapest hotelbookings etc.!)and never ever felt unsafe. We traveled on our own, walked around at night, took a local ferry, were transported by trichaws, took the %26#39;metro%26#39; in Yangon + lots of taxis in various conditions. We have stayed in cheap, but nice hotels and also have enjoyed more luxurious accomodation. The Bagan (riverview) Hotel, where we had booked de luxe accomodation ( $ 55 incl. magnificient breakfast in the garden overlooking the lake), was the highlight on the trip hotelwise.

remember you can only use cash, US $ clean, new, not folded, gives you the best rate : the bigger notes, the better rate 1100 - 1150. We also asked at a single hotel, which offered 950.

Generally the people are very friendly and helpful. We stayed 2 nights on Inle Lake. Should we go again, we would stay on shore, and then just take trips out on the lake.

Have a wonderful trip! If you want to know more - just ask. Pia Byrgiel, Denmark

Hi newstead,

I understand your concerns about actually taking a trip to Myanmar due to all the publicity regarding ethical concerns. You need not worry at all. If you think about it- local people get their revenue directly from tourists and hence they are able to support their families. As with terrorism concerns in Egypt, the locals suffer the most due to lack of tourists visiting their countries. Your experience there will depend much on your choice of guide(s) and where you plan to visit. Naturally, the further north and towards the neighbouring borders you go, the more risky it is in all aspects, but in general, everywhere on the well-beaten tourist routes, it%26#39;s very safe.

It has already been around 16 years since Myanmar opened its doors to foreigners, so you can imagine how much construction, tourism and hence, the economy has grown...Fortunately for tourists, that means that travelling around is safer and more convenient, but unfortunately for those who wish to see the last vestiges of the Old World, it is now fast diminishing in its race to catch up with the rush of %26#39;progress%26#39; and %26#39;development%26#39;.

If you can, the best times to visit is over November, December and January, when the daytime temperatures hover around 20 degrees and the evenings are balmy. Avoid travelling during the monsoon season, right after that and springtime when the temperatures reach 40 degrees and only the well-hardy locals venture out in the midday swelter- most locals have a siesta and stay indoors during those hours.

Regards, P.

Hi to everyone who has replied to my post,

Thanks for all your very useful travel advice. You have answered our concerns and we are going to Myanmar in December and we are really excited about going!!

Thanks again. xx

Hi Samvacation,

We went to Cambodia and Vietnam quite a few years ago now but I would recommend you start in the capitol Phnom Penh were you could easily see the sights there on a three night stay. Then travel to wonderful Siem Reap to see the different Angkor temples take a hike up to the Bakheng Temple at sunset to see the views of Angkor and a trip to see Angkor at sunrise is quite simply magical! We travelled to a temple surrounded by jungle called Boeng Mealea Wat which was lovely and peaceful - hardly any tourists!! You should also take a boat ride on the Tonle Sap Lake.

When we went to Vietnam we travelled from Ho Chi Minh City and up to Hanoi. We stayed in a hotel called The Grand in Ho Chi which was very central. You have to take the journey to see the Cu Chi Tunnels and the War Remnants Museum was very interesting. You must try and visit Hue and see the emperors palace, Imperial City and take a boat ride on the Perfume River. You should also travel to beautiful Hoi An we stayed in a hotel called Hoi An Riverside Resort - this has to be one of my favourite hotels! Hoi An is absolutely stunning!! We finished in Hanoi were I would recommend a restaurant called Indo China. When in Hanoi take a trip to Halong Bay and hire a junk boat.

The food in Vietnam is absolutely delicious!!

We returned from Laos earlier this year if you are planning to travel to Vientiane I would recommend a guide called Mr Bounta his email address is - laomillennium@etllao.com

The Buddha park in Vientiane is well worth a visit. Try to see the fascinating Plain of Jars in Xieng Khuang - not too many tourists there yet! You must travel to Beautiful Luang Prabang whilst in Laos, we stayed in a hotel called Sala Prabang which overlooks the Mekong. There’s loads of exquisite temples to see there and a boat trip to the Pak Ou caves is well worth a visit.

Quite simply you are in for a real treat when you visit these wonderful countries in October, have a great time!!
