Backpacker accommodation in Yangon

Can anyone recommend a list of cheap backpacker type accommodation for Yangon to stay in December? I am a solo traveller so would appreciate a place where it is easy to meet other likeminded travellers.....Will it be necessary to book ahead?

Also, what happens on arrival at Yangon airport..Will thre be touts pressuring you to stay at their accommodation? will the taxi drivers insist you stay at places they can get commission?

rlev - there are sooo many places that are cheap and relatively decent. It is a good idea to reserve ahead so that you can avoid the issue with taxi drivers.

I can recommend two - Okinawa ($5 for shared room - very clean - close to Sule Pagoda) or Motherland ($7 for private room - also downtown.)

They are both clean, which I think is the most important thing in a guesthouse in Myanmar. Safety is not an issue unless other backpackers are behaving poorly.

I no longer stay at guesthouses, although I did when I was a kid, but I cannot fathom any reason to allow a taxi driver to choose a guesthouse for you unless you are going into a city with few available accomodations, not the case in Yangon. Again, this applies all the more because of email. All these guesthouse owners have access to some kind of email, so you can make your reservation and arrange for them to pick you up at the airport.

DO NOT pay more than 5 US from the airport to downtown. If you have kyats, 5000 - 6000 is more than fine.
