time and travel- advice needed!

currenly trying to book a flight to myanmar, however i dont know how long to go for- unfortunatly the majority of my time has been consumed by looking up the negative sides of the country and how to minimise the amount of my money that ends up in government hands- now i need to book a flight and have no idea whether to go for 3 or 4 weeks- or where to go! any advice on ANYTHING would be unbelivably appreciated- how to get around, where to go, and how to be of as little impact to the country as possibe.. what its like travelling as a lone female (19) and any other little gems you can think of.. thank you!

One bit of advice would be to get yourself a guidebook.... and/or spend some time (lots of time) on the thorntree.lonelyplanet website.

I suggest you don’t get too hung up in the politics... and government issues..

You either go or you don’t go.. No such thing as going and not spending money .. When you go.. some money will go to the government.. But most importantly.. most of your money will go to normal people who benefit from your visit..

Always bear that in mind.. If you go! I recommend that you do.. It’s a magnificent country to visit.

Myanmar is a pretty safe country.. providing you observe normal common sense safety precautions.

First thing you need to sort out is visum... 4 weeks (28days) from the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok.

Read up on money.. You need to take US Dollars.. Cash only. New notes.. 100 dollar notes gives you the best rate. But get some small notes also.. as some smaller shops and restaurants are always short on change...You probably need to exchange about one third to half your money into Kyat when you get to Yangon. Current unofficial rate is around 1230 to 1250 Kyat to the USD.

airasia offers a return flight from Bangkok to Yangon.. Around USD 120.. If you buy it on-line enough time before you want to go. Also air Bagan has a special on flight at the moment as they just recently began operating internationally.

Most popular areas to visit would be the areas around 1; Mandalay.. 3 ancient cities... 2; Bagan.. the old pagodas... 3; Inle Lake and offcourse.. 4; Yangon.. The ShweDagon pagoda being the must see.. plus a few other temples and sites.... But you really do need a guidebook.. Just too many details about how to and where to.. to take it all in before you are there...

Happy and safe travels.
