brian,

not necessary but without a local partner it will be veeery expensive. There is a website ..just google myanmar business and you should be there..theres an official site too. Let me know if you cant find it.

Its a big challenge for a foreigner to buy property, you would be better off renting 1, in case you want to back off, so much easier off load.

sorry that I%26#39;m %26#39;hijacking%26#39; your thread a bit. I%26#39;m interested in spending more than the usual 4 weeks in Myanmar. My interest is in gems. I do it as a hobby and would like to get more %26#39;hands-on%26#39; experience%26#39; on site from some of the many knowledgeable people I met. Officially they are no longer allowed to teach foreigners but there are ways.

Any idea about the visa situation or where I can find out about it?

If you want a study visa or business visa.. you are perhaps better of asking at the Myanmar Embassy.. as they are the only ones who can issue these.

Normal tourist visa only gives you 4 weeks (28days).. In the past you were able to extend for up to 2 more weeks (14days).. this is no longer possible as the only office that could do this moved from Yangon to the new capitol.. where foreigners are not allowed:-)..

So they accept that you overstay your visa and charge you 3 USD per day for this...

I would not suggest that you abuse this.. You are, I%26#39;m sure, familiar with the Thai system and the consequence if you overstay your visa there?
