HI ,
Our family , 3 children aged 15 , 13 ,and 9 [boys and girl]
will be travelling to Yangon in mid may .. we are curious as to what would be %26#39;appropriate%26#39; clothing for us all to wear ? seeing that it will be hot .
We dont wish to upset the Locals by being in-appropriately dressed ... if we wear %26#39;long%26#39; shorts .. past our knees .. and tee shirts [ covering the shoulders ] ... would that be suitable for both males and females ???
Any advice ??
Clothing for Yangon
yes... it%26#39;s hot and sticky.... so light cotton clothing is best.... for temples you need to cover up..... buy longyis or wear long pants at temples.
Clothing for Yangon
so you think that 3/4%26#39;s and tee shirts would be acceptable till we buy some of the local wares ???
we spent most of the time in just half length shorts and T-shirts....
Brought with us a couple of sarongs from Bali.... actually they got a few laughs.. due to the colours...
but in the tourist areas.... the locals are used to weirdly dressed people and as long as you make sure to remove your shoes at the sacred places.. all%26#39;s well... absolutely no hassels from anyone.....
Mosegrisen is right. May is the hottest month of the year in Myanmar/Yangon. Very light cotton or linen v-neck T%26#39;s and shorts (medium to long shorts) will be OK. (just make sure the V cut is not deep for the females.) You can buy very loose, light and cheap local made cotton long pants at the famous Bo Gyoke Market in the City Center for about 2-3 US dollars for visiting the pagodas and temples; or if you are adventurous, those cotton longyi%26#39;s for both men and women, as Mosegrisen mentioned! Get the ones (variety/type) known there as the Pa-Le-Kat they are made of smooth light cool cotton. Makes good souvenirs as well. They are about 3-5 US dollars. Make sure you take 2-3 face towels each.
Foot-wear: sandles or flip-flops would be OK as you will be taking them off at each pagoda/temple.
Remember: lots of sun-block as well! (Sun protection cream/lotions)
I am a guide and I get idea for dress,Short mean too short ,t-shirt is so tight ,that is no good for you.for every body they will look with lust mind,So In Shwe dagon pagoda you have to wear safe dress,in Bagan you can wear short ,some were wear like that especially 15 is a girl she need to wear so safe t shirt and weather so hot in Bagan that you wear free and cootton is good for them ,
welcome to Burma
Dress lightly and conservatively. Women should DEFINITELY cover the shoulders and wear skirts (or shorts) covering the knees. You will see women wearing inappropriate clothing, but quite frankly the locals will disapprove even though nobody will ever tell you.
Of course there is much more leeway for men. If you wear longer shorts (or better yet, a longyii,) you%26#39;ll never have a problem.
Have fun!
