Thai New Year (Songkran) in Rangoon

Myanmar and Thais share the same New Year Custom in April. while it is called Songkran in Thailand, it is known as the Thingyan in Myanmar. Actually a phonetic specialist may well say the word is almost exactly the same but for the dilect.

Thingyan is well celebrated in Myanmar. You will find more frivolity in Yangon than in Bangkok, especially in the suburban areas. ';Mandats'; or especially constructed stalls are built all over the city, where the water throwing is usually in ernest. Usually the Shwe Dagon Pagoda Road is well known for the fun; as is around the Sule Pagoda and the City Hall. The Bahan, Shwe Gon Dine area is also well known and also the Inya Road area. If you get to Yangon a few days ahead of the festival, scout around and note the ';Mandats';. Talk to those who are building them, ask who%26#39;s organised the ';Mandat'; and you are likely to be invited to join on the days. If you are very lucky, you might even be invited to join in with a group going around the city in trucks/vans just to get a good soaking! (Just take care if you wear glasses, not to mention your cameras)

Avoid venturing far out into peripheral areas of Yangon because you might find returning to the center a bit difficult, transportwise; as well as perhaps safety issues.

Do you know the dates of songkran in rangoon this year??? I know in thailand there are slightly different dates for each place....Thanks!!!!!

Starts April 13. Lots of fun! Just cover your camera with plastic, or it will be soaked.

Thingyan is a lot more fun in Myanmar than in Thailand. There is significantly less boorish behavior, and it is much more fun and kid friendly.

Additionally, many people spend their time in monasteries and meditation centers, an irregular occurrence in Thailand.
