I see fast (1 day) ferry trips downstream from Mandalay to Bagan being offered but is there a fast ferry upstream from Bagan to Mandalay. If there is can someone please point me to information regarding timetables and costs etc. Thanks in advance.

Yes, you may take the government fast ferry upstream as well as downstream. It take a few hours longer upstream (Bagan to Mandalay).. Cost about a month ago was USD 25.00. Guesthouses or agents will arange your tickets. In high season (around Christmas time) the Mandalay to Bagan tickets are in demand so it may pay to book a couple of days ahead.

July and August are the wettest months of the year.
The time of year when some areas are dry and perhaps limiting ferry travel in some areas would be from January to say... April or May.
