situation in Yangon

I%26#39;ve recently seen various reports about Myanmar since the price increase for fuel. As I%26#39;m nowhere near SEA at the moment I would be pleased if anybody on the forum could advise if news info and travel advice from some embassies are to be taken seriously.

I had planned to visit Yangon early October. My trip would be wasted if Yangon is not functioning as normal.

Hard to say if a situation will develop. Right now there are daily demonstrations, mainly by the novice monks, but during the last few days it has been escalating to more and more places and with more and more people, civilians, joining in. There are strong calls from western governments and others, for the junta to keep the military on a leash and for the government thugs to show restraint. The fact is that people have been detained and probably tortured. It may well be that the junta declares a state of emergency any day now and perhaps will impose Marshall law. There is no way of knowing for sure. A bit like asking about the weather during October.. at the moment there%26#39;s no indication of any problems for foreigners.. or for western diplomats to be called home.. but this may change.
