Recommendations for a good hotel in Rangoon and Mandalay?

Hubby and I are looking for some where nice in both cities and would like to be within walking distance of major attractions.

Recommendations for a good hotel in Rangoon and Mandalay?

Both cities are covered reasonably well in www.5starmyanmar.com

I think the Mandalay Hill is pretty neat in Mandalay and the Governor%26#39;s Residence in Yangon is quite unique and a bit of history.

Recommendations for a good hotel in Rangoon and Mandalay?

Hi Alicia01

Yangon (Rangoon): Traders%26#39; Hotel - very central; I will strongly recommend. Also the Grand Plaza on the same road about half a mile away. There is also the Thamada Hotel across the road from The Grand Plaza; but I am not familiar with it. All are within walking distance of the Bo Gyoke Market, the Sule Pagoda, the Bandoola Gardens and they Rangoon Jetty. If you are a keen walker, (and willing to get up early in the morning,) the Shwe Dagon Pagoda is about 30 - 45 minutes walk. Otherwise you%26#39;ll need a taxi. The reclining pagoda at the Chauk Htat Kyi and the Kaba Aye (World Peace) Pagoda - you will need the taxi. They are relatively cheap anyway.

Mandalay: I can recommend the Mandalay Swan Hotel wich is just across the road from the Mandalay Palace Walls. You can walk to the Palace; but I%26#39;d rather take a taxi. The Sedona is next to the Mandalay Swan. I have read recently on this forum about another well recommended hotel whci I can%26#39;t just recall immediately. You will still need transport for the Mandalay Hill, Ku Tho Daw and the Maha Muni (Payagyi) Pagoda). While you are in Mandalay you should try and get to Amarapura, U Bein Bridge and perhaps Sagaing and Innwa Me Nu Oke Kyaung.

I hope this helps.

Hi Alicia01,

I%26#39;ve just found the hotel in Mandalay, I mentioned earlier. In fact there are 2 well recommended ones the Mandalay View Inn and the Hotel by the Red Canal. check them out on page 3 of the current Myanmar forum.

The Hotel ';Red Canal'; is very nice.... same management as Mandalay view inn.... latter is actually a sort of budget place.. very central location close to the Sedona... Red Canal is a little isolated.. but exceptionally nice place.. run by wonderful staff....

Bear in mind that a taxi is only a dollar or two.

We (two senior ladies) just returned from Myanmar, was there July 13-29 . . . in Yangon, we stayed at the Central Hotel, just around the corner from Traders and across the street and down 2 blks from the Scott Market. The Central was like a nice Holiday Inn, 2 beds, mini bar, safe, big room, nice bathroom w/tub/shower but was only $30/night.

We stayed at the Mandalay View Inn in Mandalay, right around the corner from the Swan . . .even though it is ';budget'; . . . $28/night, we had a very nice stay there. Our room was narrow but long and we had everything we needed . . . a/c, tv, 2 beds, minibar, balcony, big bathroom w/tub/shower. The place was absolutely spotless and the staff were friendly and extremely helpful.

Taxis are cheap. The Green Elephant Restaurant in Mandalay is right around the corner from the Mandalay View and was the best place we ate in all of Myanmar . . . and we had some good meals. We just thought this place was outstanding.

I hope you have as good a time as we did. I typed up my travelog and would be happy to share . . . email me at behrens@unt.edu if interested.

Happy travels,

Sandy (in Denton)

';even though it is ';budget'; . . . $28/night';

LOL.. please don%26#39;t think it meant as a negative comment... I%26#39;m all for saving money when I travel... I merely meant it was cheaper than the Red Canal..... We went to several ';budget hotels'; in Myanmar and really enjoyed them and had actually booked at the Mandalay View Inn... we were just lucky to be moved to their new hotel just after it opened...
