Bagan and Yangon.how long to stay?

Hi, Im going to visit Bagan early June 2007, flying bkk to Yangon, then I guess i will fly to Bagan.

How long should i stay in Bagan for? I want to have a good look at the temple sites and certainly do not want to rush. Will 2 full days be enough?

And how about Yangon...is 2 days enough or would it be better to stay 3 days?

Thanks to anyone that can help me out

Andrew

Bagan and Yangon.how long to stay?

Yangon... 1 full day is enough really.. having said this.. Lots of people find things to see and do for a week or more.

Bagan... 2 full days will just allow you to scratch the surface... One day on a bike and one with horse cart... enough?.. Well, not really. We had planned for 3 full days but gave it 4... and could happily have stayed longer.

Bagan and Yangon.how long to stay?

Yes ,Bagan is so great site for Burma,If you interested in Temples and pagodas, that is just cultural building but they have strong story and that tell about real history of Bagan period.so I will say if you want to know about history of Bagan templs ,you should stay full 3 days cause you can go around Bagan sightseeing.

the first day you arrive early at Airport of Nyaung U(3 miles away from Bagan )and just 1 and half hour at hotel arrange and start sightseeing that will take one day full, and sunset on the Shwe san daw pagoda, that you will get good sense of view in bagan,

next day you start to go around Myin ga bar village and art crafts working, and you should try to get sun set on the river of Irrawady with boat, that you pay 6000 kyats they will treat you with plan tea(Green tea and brown suger),

and the last day of Bagan in the morning go to Mt popa I do not prefre to climb Mt popa but you should go national park of Mt popa that you will get nature and calm, and evening sun set is Pyat that gyi pagoda that is great one for sun set,

And one most importance thing is you try to get good knowledge guide who will say great history and legendary of our Great Bagan time.

Welcome to BURMA and get enjoy in Bagan

2 days enough.. though you have more intrest to SALAY, and POPPA, around bagan, that%26#39;s take one more day to you.

for yangon 1st call on arrival and 2 call check-in at hotel.. depends..

rgds,

Victor

We will be in Bangkok next March 08, and would like to fly to Bagan for 3 nights to tour the temples %26amp; do the hot air balloon.

Can anyone suggest a travel agent to book through that is moderately priced?

I am mildly hanicapped, is there a reasonably priced hotel to stay in Bagan where I do not have to climb any stairs to access the room (prefer two twin beds), to access the restaurant?

A pool is important too.

Thinking about staying at the The Hotel @ Tharabar Gate... any suggestions or this or other hotels?

I%26#39;ve read this is close to temples, want to make sure it doesn%26#39;t require climbing stairs.

How about THE SERENITY hotel?

Do we need to hire a car/driver to visit the temples?

Or do we hire a horse cart?

I cannot bike.

Thanks!

Dear Andrew,

Sorry delay reply. I was in Chig Mai and Chiang Rai, Thailand!

Depend, your budget for splarge hotels. I recomment

';Thiri Marlar Hotel, which nice clean closed to River view Res, Sun Set garden restaurants.. and many more. for swimming.. you have long Irrawaddy river.., It%26#39;s a joke!

I%26#39;m in a hurry movig house.. and contact you again hope so.

Regards,

Aung

On 3 trips to Myanmar I have always spent my first and last nights in Yangon largely to visit the Shwedagon Pagoda in the evening when the lighting is at its best. This should not be missed. If you have time 2 full days will probably be sufficient. The Central Market used to be a Rangoon highlight selling everything from everywhere but today%26#39;s rents have driven out most of the shopkeepers. It%26#39;s a place you can skip unless T-shirts interest you. As for Bagan I would stay at least 2 days. Sorry you can%26#39;t go on to Inle Lake.

Thai/burma border

Hi, I%26#39;m planning a travel in Myanmar. I will be passing the road border ex Mae Sai (Thailand) to Tachileik (Myanmar) and then taking a taxi from Tachileik to Kengtung. We already have the visa.

I have heard that there may be problems/difficulties in crossing the border, as sometimes Burma authorities close the border.

Had someone met any difficulty in crossing this border?

I%26#39;m evaluating if booking a flight Chiang Mai/Mandalay or crossing the border.

Thanks for your help!!

Thai/burma border

have just returned from a visit to Myanmar. We also thought of crossing from Mae Sai, but decided in the end it was better to fly into Mandalay. when we got there, a Burmese friend said the border crossing would have been unadvisable.

Thai/burma border

sorry, we flew in the end from Bangkok - Yangon

Cynthia, what did you end up doing? I%26#39;m in a similar situation, I%26#39;ll be traveling to Mandalay next week and I%26#39;m not sure if I should fly or take a bus from Chiang Mai (which is where I%26#39;m at now)

Please advise.

Thanks

Kenji

Hi Cythia and Kenji,

I would love to advise some points as I am Yangon based travel agent.

The best way is to fly into myanmar than crossing borders.

Now foreigners can not go Tachileik to Keng Tung by Land Road either. if you like to go you have to take the domestic flights. you should check the flight schedule.

Foreigner crossing borders can reach up to Keng Tung only unless you have made the prearrangements with Licensed Tour agency. The permission needs to go into further inner into the country. are you going back from the same point border or are you flying out by air from Yangon?? if So you need to arrange the permission for Different entrance and Exit. Please check with Myanmar Embassy or concilor office to make sure that point. If they say OK then you are ok... but please check.

Thanks for the note.,

Bon Voyage

Temple rules

Just been browsing throuhg the website www.templesofdynasty.com, and read that when entering temples in Myanmar that shoes/socks/andstockings must be removed. I can understand the shoes, and as a male i can accept the socks, but my partner always wears slacks with tights [ pantyhose ] underneath, which would make the stockings removal a bit awkward. Does anybody have any experience of this. Is it true, and if so is it strictly enforced.

It also recommended not to take mobile [cell ] phones as they are likely to be confiscated. I would have no intention of using it in Myanmar, but it will be needed on my return to Melbourne airport to secure my pick up by a friend [ have you ever tried quueing for an airport public phone]. Is this also true.

It also states that all foreign currency in excess of 2000 usd/ travellers cheques/cameras/ jewelry/ and any other electronic apparatus must be declared on a customs declaration [ which i assume is provided by the airline [ in my case Thai ] is this also true.

I have also been browsing the post regarding Myanmar tour companies. I will not have trouble finding one, but can anybody tell me if these companies require money up front, or credit card details, or will it be possible to pay on arrival.

Bit long winded i know, but any info will be greatly appreciated.

Thank Yiu.

Temple rules

One more question. Is it possible to get good local food that is not spicy [ Hot ].

Temple rules

WELCOME TO BURMA,

Temple rules,

for your paetner, can wear that.some of the place they find the problem others some of the place they allowed to wear the socks.

About mibile,

That is you can bring it but you can not use in Burma cause different sim card.My guests they bring it their Mb phone. So you can.

About currency,

About credit,

Some big tour company they can arrange for that and accept, that you find which is accept for credit paymeant.

so happy and free in your days of 2007 wish from BURMA.

About our usual and typical food are not spicy but oily

: )..., that I mean You will be get great tease of our food,

Hi Gander,

Regarding the socks I can say that removal is a must at all pagodas that I have been to! Chinese temples can be an exception.

The Burmese food can actually be very oily and also spicy, but you could try a Chinese restaurant and eat fried rice or noodles or chicken sweet %26amp; sour (although not really local...). You will find Chinese restaurants everywhere

Thanks Guys

Hi, we visited Myanmar in March this year, no one asked about mobiles - didn%26#39;t seem bothered in the least when bags were screened at airports. No checks on money either. Tour companies ask for small deposit by money transfer or credit card and prefer the rest as cash - they meet you at the airport. Traders and other larger hotels take cards but all charge extortionate fees to do so.

visa for us citizen to mynamar

Can anyone advise where is best for me to get a visa

as I live in Pennsylvania.

visa for us citizen to mynamar

Myanmar has embassies in New York and DC... I%26#39;ve read that the New York one doesn鈥檛 do ';mail order';. 3 forms (downloadable from net).. plus 3 photos required.

visa for us citizen to mynamar

Alicia-

If you plan to be in New York, you can get your visa at the Myanmar Mission to the UN. When the General Assembly is in session, you will have to wait 2 weeks. When it is not, you only have a 1 week wait.

To do by mail, best go through the embassy in DC. Documentation is as Mosegrisen indicated. Also 20 bucks.

Hi,

Was it really hard to get visa to visit myanmar? Can u please let me know the process since I%26#39;ve been planing to go back in 2008.

Thanks.

kay

No, it%26#39;s not really hard. It%26#39;s just slow and takes time. Many of my friends in US have been able to get it by post at the Embassy in WDC.

I sent mine to the DC embassy via FedEx with a prepaid return FedEx envelope. I was terrified to send my passport in the mail, but it went down with no problems at all. Save the return FedEx info so you can track it. Seeing it return helps ease the mind. The visa is a cool, full page sticker.

we used Magado to book our flights and visas in March this year. You pay a small deposit in advance, email a completed form to them with digital mugshots. They meet you at the airport - before passport control somehow! Then take you through to the luggage belt to wait whilst they go back through and do all your visa stuff - surreal but very impressive - we expected to be arrested any minute for not getting anything checked. After about 5 minutes the smiling chap returned with out passports and visas in exchange for the rest of the cash we owed him. He then kindly found the hotel driver for us.

The only advice is to carefully check the dates and spelling on the emailed copies you are sent before confirming you are happy. We took a copy of the emailed version with us too, luckily because the airline wanted to see it on departure form UK. The lady we dealt with at Magado was Miss Aye.

Visa on arrival?

Is it possible to get a visa on arrival at the Yangon airport? I%26#39;d rather not have the hassle/expense of pre-arranging one if it is not neccessary. Thanks to anyone who can advise.

Tim

Visa on arrival?

No, you can not get the visa on arrival at the Yangon Airport. You have to pre-arrange at least two to four weeks ahead.

Visa on arrival?

Thank you for responding. I started the procedure with an online visa service, visaHQ.com, and so far have been very pleased with their rates and service.

  • New Airport; distance to Yangon

How is the new airport in Yangon working? And how far is is to the city? I will be taking a taxi to The Governor%26#39;s Mansion Hotel (was Pansea), near the Shwedegon Pagoda. How long a ride to get there?

    New Airport; distance to Yangon

There are no new Airport. The old same place far from down town 16 Km.,They make shine all of the arrival and depart gate and building.

    From Pensea o airport that will charge (6000 kyats),that equal to ( 5 $).

from hotel governor to airport.will take 40 minutes.

    New Airport; distance to Yangon

As indicated above the airport location in Yangon has not changed but the international arrivals area has been refurbished (even perhaps in a new building) since my earlier visits in the 1980s. It used to be a dimly lit hall but now much improved. I think domestic flights still use the older part of the airport.

I believe you will enjoy the Governor%26#39;s Residence hotel, far different from earlier accomodations! And be sure to visit the Shwedegon in the evening both for the lighting and because other tourists are absent, dining at their hotels.

I think we better call new airport building.. isn%26#39;t it... The new building is working well by singaporean design. it is compact. well we hope for the better service...

Pansea is a good choice. there are taxis charging 6000 Kyats.. better check if you are coming alone the taxi should not share with others since you are paying full...

  • house/aprtment rentals, cost of living, etc

Am considering a teaching job in Yangon. Can anyone tell me about the prices and availability of housing and general cost of living there? Thanks so much!!

house/aprtment rentals, cost of living, etc

    Hi kklein,

Assuming that you will not earn a high expat salary I recommend you check with your employer. Maybe he can help you. You should also check, if renting a flat or house as a foreigner is allowed. Sounds strange, but in Burma everything is possible. There might be restrictions for certain areas, types of flats etc. I have lived in Yangon a while ago and can say that living cost are definitely higher for foreigners than for locals. Check, if your employer can at least arrange housing for you. Also be prepared to pay extra for vegetables etc. on the market.

Sorry for not being able to give figures!

    Visa for Myanmar?

I will be in Chiang mai for 10 days from July 28th.

Is it possible to buy a visa for myanmar in Chiang mai , so that we can fly from Chiang Mai?

Would appreciate any info and help. Thanks

    Visa for Myanmar?

I suppose there is a Myanmar Consular office in CNX%26gt; but better check whether they can issue of not. I think the best way is to take in advance in your country. if you are from Beijing there is Myanmar Embassy.,. they can give you easily.

    Vincent

    Visa for Myanmar?

Visum in Chiang Mai is NOT a possibility.

In Thailand you need to go to, or have someone arrange it for you, in the myanmar embassy in Bangkok.

Best to get it before you arrive if possible.

You are able to fly from Chiang Mai to Mandalay (and on to Yangon) with Mandalay airlines (used to be Thursday but I think there may be a second weekly flight come high season).

    Ticket is around USD120.00.

Win Unity Hotel Monywa is getting more and more sketchy hotel wise from my friends and my own experiences.

To mention would be Win Unity Hotel Monywa, our latest adventure where the maids were caught in rooms opening bags and stealing money.

We had $100 US stole from our room. A police report was filed. The owner refuses to acknowledge it, and wouldnt even give a discount on the room (since they hold your passport, i recommend refusing to give it to any hotel if possible).

Avoid the Win Unity Hotel Monywa at any cost, There are many hotels here, try your luck with another, just not Win Unity Hotel.

    Help needed for Myanmar trip

We (2 couples) are planning a trip to Chiang Mai and Myanmar for Feb 08 and plan to fly from Australia via Singapore to Yangon and spend 7 nights in Myanmar and then fly from either Mandalay or Yangon to Chiang Mai and then to Bangkok and home via Singapore.

Couple of questions - where should we spend the 7 nights? - we don%26#39;t want to be too rushed but would like to see some interesting sights - I%26#39;m thinking Yangon, Inle Lake, Bagan and Mandalay or is this too hectic and is it better to fly from Yangon (ie more frequent flights) or Mandalay to Chiang Mai - suggested 7 day itinerary including mode of transport (including suggested airlines) would be appreciated.

    Thanks very much

    Mez

    Help needed for Myanmar trip

7 days is not enough to cover the 4 places that you mention. Probably 14 to 21days would be pushing it even...

Any form of travel incl. air in Myanmar takes a lot more time that in most other places.

It is possible to fly from Chiang Mai to Mandalay... non-stop..(once a week... Thursday)... But the return is via Yangon... and pretty much all other flight are through Yangon.

If you are serious about visiting Myanmar.. i%26#39;d suggest you do a lot of reading.... There%26#39;s just too much to see there to warrent such a short trip... You could (perhaps) ';do';.. Yangon and Bagan in that time.

Get your visa in Australia before you leave.... Make sure you erad up on the money situation also...Happy travels.

    Help needed for Myanmar trip

This past January I spent 7 nights in Myanmar. While we always wish visits were longer I found a week adequate. My itinerary was first night in Yangon (arriving late with just enough time to go to the Shwedegon Pagoda, and leaving for Bagan early the next day), 2 nights at Bagan, 2 at Inle Lake, then returning to Yangon for the final 2. It would be possible to squeeze in Mandalay en route from Bagan to the lake but I did not want to give up a night at Inle. See on this board my posts of 18 July - and keep in mind Kipling%26#39;s words about Burma! For 25 years I have been drawn back to the country so hope you also enjoy your travels there.

Do not miss Inle lake around that enough for 2 days in there,if you like ancient buildings you should go Bagan,Yangon is entrance of the Burma

    welcome to Burma

Thank you all for your great advice - yes I realise its not much time but we figure if we love the place we%26#39;ll go back for a more extensive experience. Sounds like Yangon, Bagan and Inle Lake will be plenty for us. Are the flights from Yangon to Chiang Mai daily? How much will it cost in airfares to do Yangon, Bagan, Inle Lake, back to Yangon and then Chiang Mai?

    Thanks again

    Mez

While someone who already know their way around Myanmar or someone who%26#39;ve done a great deal of reading.. may.. and I say it again... MAY be able to enjoy 3 areas in 7 days.. I%26#39;d still try and extend your saty there if you can.. Guess it also depends on if you are counting arrival and departure days into the 7 days.. I still suggest that you choose fewer places and make the most of those... However I do agree that you could go to Bagan and Inle.. and just see the ShweDagon in Yangon ...

The Chiang Mai to Mandalay flight is on a Thursday and last year the Yangon to Chiang Mai was Thursday and Sunday. (Mandalay air)...

Bangkok to Yangon daily with airasia or Bagan air.. The third airline in Myanmar (worth using) is Yangon air... But they only do domestic flights.

    Jetstar Asia has Singapore%26gt;Yangon flights...

Other airlines to look at would be Thai, Malaysian and Singopore (Silk). and also Bangkok airways.. Airasia is the cheapest..

Airfares:... internal flights range from around USD 35.00 (Mandalay to Bagan or Bagan to Heho (Inle))... to around USD 80.00 Yangon to Heho (Inle) or Yangon to Bagan.

Mandalay Air Chiang Mai to Manbalay is around USD 120.00 (incl. Thai departure tax). I%26#39;m not sure of the Yangon to Chiang Mai fare.. but probably about the same... Airasia Bangkok to Yangon return around USD 120.00 (depending on flight date and how early in advance you book).

Myanmar departure tax is USD 14.00.. cash at time of check in.

Just a couple of thoughts about bluedragononline%26#39;s detailed itinerary:

    1) I urge anyone to visit the Schwedagon in the evening rather than the afternoon, preferably when other tourists are having dinner elsewhere. Over the years I%26#39;ve been there at all hours %26#39;til closing and in the evening the lighting is at its best - pure magic - and mainly local people enjoying the beauty.

    2) I am no doubt spoiled by earlier trips but Scott%26#39;s Market is far less interesting than it used to be. At one time the stalls were filled with unusual items from all over the world but with rising rents many of the merchants have gone elsewhere. Great place for T-shirts, however.

I%26#39;m convicted and it%26#39;s no doubt every where on the planet is an outpost fot tourist attraction and souvenior....it on your nerve,,, and......it is a culture for every women who buys here there everywhere.. on futuristic planet..

    Victor

Wow Thanks for all the great information - I assume this itinerary is through a tour company - any recommendations on whether or not to use one and if so which ones are reliable and is this a reasonable price?

    Thanks Mez

  • Want to buy Malarone

Hallo, I would like to buy Malarone (2 packages if possible). Does anyone sell it? Please let me know, it is not sold in Laos, Thailand, Myanmar. Thanks.

    Want to buy Malarone

It might be under a generic name ..... Malarone may be the prescription name and not the generic label.....Good luck........ in the US any physician could prescribe.....

    Want to buy Malarone

I saw your post long time ago,But I do not know what you mension and I would like to know what the name of (Malarone),what kinds of that you mean?

    Facilities Ngapali beach area

Are there any restaurants outside the tourist hotels in Ngapali? Are there local places to eat? can anyone tell me if there are any other facilities outside the hotels? Any good places to tour, any shops/bars etc?

    Facilities Ngapali beach area

Yes, there are good local restaurants just outside the tourist hotels in Ngapali, especially outside the Bayview Hotel and the Ngapali Beach Hotel. Just one thing, if you need the washroom, just walk back to your hotel because they are just not yet ready for the full facility requirements.

There aren%26#39;t any ';proper'; shops but you may find interesting local shops outside the Bayview because the village is just outside the hotel. The nearest town is Thandwe in land. You will need transport to get there.

The village outside Ngwe Saung is much more ';developed'; in that there are a number of restaurants, shops and cafe%26#39;s. I did feel and fear it might become ';over-developed'; and spoil it all one day.

(Mazzaroo: Please refer to my posting of 18 January on the 2 beaches Ngapali and Ngwe Saung which I wrote following my recent visit. )

Wow!!!! Thank you so much!!!! Just read your posting after your trip in Jan - really useful. It sounds amazing!!!! Im dreaming about mongroves and beautiful white sand already and definitely now a bit more able to persuade the boyfriend not to want to head to Thailand afterwards! Ive been researching a bit this week and my mind is made up - i am definitely going this Xmas!!! My mums family are Burmese, but it%26#39;s good to get an idea as well from other people%26#39;s point of view. I do have quite a few questions still though if you wouldnt mind?!!! ....?

    Khayeethe

hi, do you have any idea about the weather in May?

    Hi,

May is the hottest month of the year in Myanmar with temperatures around 37C - 40C +/- ! It is also the dryest. Temperatures in the morning around 7-8 am will start around 24 - 25C+/- . The temperatures are highest in central Myanmar in Mandalay, Bagan at this time of the year. Cooler to around 21C - 27/30C +/- in the Shan States where the Inle Lake and Taungyi are because it is on a higher elevation - the Shan Plateau. I hope this is helpful.

I%26#39;m back Khayeethe!!! Still not booked flights or anything for our trip in december, but wont be in a position to book it for a while. However, we are now alot clearer what we want to do, so some questions for you if you have the time:

    1) Flying from London, it looks cheaper to buy a return to Bangkok and then buy an internal flight from Bangkok-yangon, would you agree?

    2) How do we go about booking the internal flights bangkok/yangon and yangon-ngapali? Where? How far in advance should i book these internal flights?

    3) Nagapli beach hotel has no swimming pool as far as i can see...what%26#39;s your opinion on the best value hotel in ngapali with pool? Is the best way to book the hotel in ngapali over the net?

    4) Are you able to go deep sea fishing/take a boat out in ngapali?

    5) We will be going over xmas and NY, would 25th dec/1st Jan be celebrated in nagapli being an international resort? (doesnt bother us but interested to know)

    6) which hotels have you stayed in Yangon?

    Are you Burmese? Best wishes

    Hi Mazzaroo,

    1. UK to Rangoon/Yangon: I would suggest you investigate and perhaps book now. Remember, December, particularly after around 10 December is classed as peak season. I use Trailfinders or Flight Center. I find it cheaper to book a return flight from UK to Yangon; rather than getting a return UK to Bangkok and then another return flight between Bangkok to Yangon. You can fly into Yangon from UK (eg. London) via Bangkok, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. It is the cost and then the flight times; especially the connection times, which will decide for me the route I fly. My experiences are:-

Thai Airways:- Very good flight and connection times. Usually only about 1 - 1 and a half hour wait at Bangkok. Very popular and usually the cheap(er) tickets arre sold out very quickly (therefore you might be left with more expensive tickets)- you might just get them now. Flights are Thai all the way.

Singapore Airlines:- Very good flight times; but there may be a longer connection time at Singapore; and ofcourse the flight time is longer. Flights are with Singapore and Silk Air (Singapore%26#39;s regional arm/subsiduary)

Malaysian Airlines:- similar to Singapore. Flights are with Malaysian Airlines throughout.

If you buy separate tickets, you may possibly get cheaper flights with JetStar from Singapore; or Bangkok Airways or AirAsia from Bangkok.

    2. Bangkok/Singapore/KL - Yangon flights are not internal flights. They are all international flights. Perhaps you meant Regional.

    3. Answered above. I would book now. With Trailfinders, you would be able to pay deposit only with the balance nearer; and they don%26#39;t charge for using credit cards either!

    4. The Ngapali Beach Hotel (NBH), being well established, having existed for some time has no swimming pool. The newer ones do, like the Thande Ngapali and the Aurreum (refer to my article of 18 Jan07). I am familiar with the NBH; but having experienced Thande Bagan Hotel, and also having checked out the Thande Ngapali while I was there last time, I can recommend it. I have not experienced booking on line. The web sites, if they have, are not fully geared for booking on line, so, personally, I wouldn%26#39;t chance it. I normally book through a travel agent in Yangon.

    5. Yes, you can get a boat out into the sea to other islands, snorkling etc. I am not so sure about fishing. I%26#39;ve not experienced it myself.

    6. I have stayed at the Traders and the Sedona Hotel in Yangon. I can recommend both; but to be in the center of the City, I would recommend Traders or the Park Royal Grand Plaza a bit further along on the same road. I know the Traders can be booked on line, direct; and you get a discount.

You probably gathered the meaning of my nom de plume. Yes.

    Khayeethe

    To add:-

Yes, Christmas and New year are celebrated in Ngapali. We were there for the New Year in Dec06/Jan 07. Remember, a lot depend on the crowd (guests). all on similar line with music, fireworks and letting off the small hot air balloons.

Fishing: I don%26#39;t think there are facililties for deep sea fishing.

    Internal Flights:-

Yangon - Ngapali or Yangon - Bagan: I normally ask my travel agent in Yangon to book the flights. About 2-3 months ahead is plenty of time. Generally you will be able to book these flights when you get to Yangon; but if you can book ahead do so. Flights are with Air Bagan; Air Mandalay or Yangon Air. All go to Ngapali, Bagan and Mandalay. The rule of theum is to get the first fllight out of Yangon and get the last flight out back to Yangon.

Wow - thanks loads for your help again!

International flights - my uncle has suggested qatar airways as well as they are cheap and go via Doha...ill have to get this sorted soon i know. I will definitely check out trailfinders too for this, thanks for the tip

Yangon - Ngapali internal flight %26amp; hotels in ngapali - i would rather book these before arriving in Myanmar being the peak season in december. How can I go about booking this in advance??

Both those hotels in ngapali look fab, i cant wait!

    Ngapale hotel.

High hotel is sanoway hotel, the great one in ther,Room rates is 130 to 160 $ ,and mid range is Lin ther Oo,that I prefere 20 to 30 $ per night in high season.

    10 nights january 08

Previous posting is correct in that the best of Hotels is Sandoway - see their web site for pricing. www.sandowayresort.com.

They can arrange airport transfers in Yangon and the fights.

A few other fine hotels on the beach (see the reviews) so plenty of eating out choice.

Fares from Yangon by Air Mandalay in Jan are $66 each way.

Think you will find the the cheapest deal with these hotels is to book as early as possible.. on-line ... and not with the hotel direct.. Try sites such as hoteltravel.com and asiarooms.com

Local agents may be able to give you some good deals too.

  • Marine inhabitants in Andaman Sea

Hi! Does anybody know about marine life in Andaman Sea?

I am going to visit the Myanmar';s beaches ( I don';t decide yet Ngwe Saung or Ngapali) early the second part of November. I like

to swim, but I afraid the meduses and stringrays. I know, that the

December and January is the time on Phuket, when very active

marine plants, and it';s impossible to be in water. It was the terrible

accident in Goa (India) on the November 2006, when one tourist

was killed, probably, because of the sting of some marine inhabitant, disguised in the sand, when he swam on the waves near the coast. Are the Myanmar beaches secure?

Sorry for my bad english, but I hope you understand me.

Thanks to anyone that can help me.

    Marine inhabitants in Andaman Sea

Have visited Ngapali Beach in January on four occasions in the last 6 years and I swim and snorkel every day. Have never seen a jellyfish (medusa) or stingray and cannot remember seeing even a sea urchin so you should be fine.

Sea is warm, shallow and clear.

However a few years ago when in Phuket in January quite a few people were stung- so stick to Myanmar and Sandoway.

    Geoff

    Marine inhabitants in Andaman Sea

I m very happy to reply this.Because I stayed in the hotel name bay of bengal in Ngwe Saung last summer. The sea ,sand and the service was great. But if you like night life and happening thats another story.

I hope it can be suit for every age

    Aurieum hotel chain

Does anyone know if this resort is good in ngapali beach AND in Bagan .......

    Thanks,

    Bette

    Aurieum hotel chain

Aurieum hotel?... Pretty sure the one in Bagan is that monstrosity or should I say atrocity.. with the viewing tower.. right in the middle of the heritage site....

    Aurieum hotel chain

Thanks ......... you made your point ...... I am not staying there

Whilst my info is 15 months out of date we did have a look around their new resort hotel at Ngapali , whilst being constructed.

Individual teak bungalows , many with plunge pools or spa tubs and appearing to be very up market.

Do not know whether it opened for 06/07 season and will have to wait till the end of this year to check it out.

Worthwhile web searching to see current info.

    Geoff

If mosegrisen has the right hotel I agree it, and particularly its tower, is a monstrosity, and unfortunately so close to the temples. I can recommend on the high end the Thiripyitsaya, now part of theSakura chain. Ask for a room facing the Ayeyarwady River.

Check some of the on-line booking agencies for deals... hoteltravel, asiarooms and others cover Myanmar.... just do some searching on google. Also the local agents give better deals than booking direct with hotels.. generally.. at least in the top range.

    Auriem Hotels

Thanks you all for the info ..... I AM using a local agent in Burma ..... I won%26#39;t be booking myself online ( too old for that :))

..... I just wanted to know how the Aurieum was in Ngapali Beach .... and the one in Bagan ......

    But thanks for any suggestions.

    Bette

We didn%26#39;t go to Ngapali and stayed in just cheapy in Bagan... but the one that seem to get very good comments at Ngapali is this one:

    http://www.sandowayresort.com/

In Yangon we stayed at Traders and Kandawgyi Palace. In Mandalay ';Hotel Red Canal';.

Sandoway did get good comments except for Lester%26#39;s comments on the cockroaches coming via the drain ... he liked the hotel .... and his comment about the roaches via the drain were very astute ... :))

I had a similar experience ( roaches coming from the shower drain) when we stayed at the Mena House ( palace wing) and had a spectacular view of the pyramids in Geza ....... paid through the nose for the room ..... thank GOD it was on the last night that I saw the roaches or I would have freaked out!! This hotel has one of the highest rankings ( Hotels of the World or some such nonsense.

I think my Burma agent was trying to tell me that the Aurium in Bagan was A MONSTROCITY .... but her English didn%26#39;t come across so well. WHich is why I posted on Tripadviosr .

A Fodor%26#39;s person who had a well documented trip was pleased with it ( Bagan) ...... and since I was going to Ngapali ..... I thought I would ask .....

I was beginning to worry about this forum. I know I contribule all the time when I visit hotels ( I add my two cents on TripAdvisor) ..... Now you guys are showing your true colors .... thanks ...... I am sure I will have more questions .....

Thank you everyone AND MAJOR THANKS to Lester ......

Creepy crawlies are, I%26#39;m afraid, part of the joy of travelling in the hot climates... Mostly in the better places they spray to an extent that I fear the chemicals do us more damage than the roaches and other insects would.. Living in a hot climate myslef these days.. I%26#39;m pretty used to them.

About the Aurieum at Bagan... if its part of your tour, why not.. Looks ok and the location, while remote.. at least you get to stay in something unique:-).

As for Mena House.. I did considder it.. But opted for the Conrad instead... No roaches there.. well, only the two legged ones downstairs at the casino... Happy travels...

I can pick my own hotels .. it%26#39;s not part of any tour except my own.

Thanks for evryone%26#39;s help.....my mother in law is very ill so my mind will be preoccupied with her and the doctors for the time being ... when I can ';think clearly'; I will post again.

I am not ';doing'; the Aurium ..... I am booking Sandoway ( along with the creepy crawlers, Traders in Yangon and my mind is still not made up about Bagon but it%26#39;s either Yangon Thiripyitsaya Sakura Bagan, or Hotel Tharabar Gate ( not 100% sure yet)

    looking for good restaurants

    travelmyanmar.com/…20myanmar.html

the ';EdenBBB'; and the ';RiverView'; stood out for us as exceptional.. but you will be able to find some nice food at very reasonable prices.

    looking for good restaurants

If you do go to Inle... Please go and visit ';Miss Nyaungshwe';, next to the Bright hotel.. best avocado salad I ever tasted.. and for less than 1 dollar....

    http://myanmar.inlelake.info/restaurants.html

    Go To ';New Bagan, near to Law Ka Nan Da Pagoda';

The beautiful restaurant near to Irrawaddy river name '; Sun SET Garden'; say..

you%26#39;re friend of Aung Kyaw Moe

Wish all the dream to come to Myanmar soon wake up!

    Victor

We have always , on our various visits to Bagan , eaten at the ';River View';. Whilst popular with groups there are plenty of tables and the food is good and the beer is cold.

Food about 1000-1200 chat per serving , beer twice as much.

The toilet block is excellent , all fully tiled western style .

Postscript to my earlier posting - also SunSet View has similar facilities and pricing and probably better position.

Beer is Mandalay or Myanmar - no good Bavarian beer I%26#39;m afraid!

  • Electronic Equipment Declaration

    Hi everyone,

Going on a trip to Myanmar in November and I%26#39;m intending to bring along a DSLR with some lenses, a tripod, and a battery charger. On top of that, I%26#39;ll also be bringing a laptop. Do any of these items need to be declared at the airport?

    Electronic Equipment Declaration

Customs are no longer interested in what you bring.. just remember that a mobile phone will not work.. except as an alarmclock.

    Electronic Equipment Declaration

thanks, that sets my heart at ease. :)

do not worry ,bring it your things(Eletic) : D

when you took your tripod to Great Shwe dagon pagoda the will tell you extra money, but said no way and passed them.

please took many photos from Burma and please advertise us around the universe

I think what the previous poster is saying is that there used to be an extra fee for photografy at the ShweDagon Pagoda.. (USD 5.00).. This is no longer (usually) being charged.. But may depend on who you are and when you go.... I suggest that a good time to go there is late in the afternoon... so that you see it during daylight and also at night. They do allow you to leave and come back in.. as long as you return the same day.... (not a 24 hour ticket).

The Schwedagon is at its prime in the evening when the lighting is magical and other tourists are at dinner leaving you with the Burmese. On visits over 25 years I have always found it the best ';entertainment'; in the city.

Thanks everyone for the information on visiting and photographing ShweDagon Pagoda.

Are there any festivals, holidays or religious events that would be celebrated in Myanmar during the November period that would be interesting for a tourist and a visual treat for photographers?

    Thanks once again!

Honeymoon - bored for more than a week on ngapali beach?

Hi all! Im back again after a while....our trip over xmas is now becoming our honeymoon! My fiancee posted earlier today as he is paranoid that his time at Ngapali beach will not be sun tanning weather in december!!!! - my burmese family have told him otherwise, and im sure it would be lovely, right?

we will be looking forward to the relaxing end to our 3 weeks in myanmar on the beach after lots of travelling - we do like our lolling on the beach but im wondering whether 10 days will be too long there....is there much within day tripping distance of ngapali

Honeymoon - bored for more than a week on ngapali beach?

Six nights ,seven days are about enough , which could include a trip to Thandwe village or even a round of Golf ( quite fun - but only caddies are allowed in the rough - snakes!).

Lots of beach walks and places to cycle and finish the day with a massage and a sundowner.

Congrats on your future wedding - we think Ngapali beach is the IDEAL end to a Myanmar visit,

    Geoff

Honeymoon - bored for more than a week on ngapali beach?

    Congratulations! Mazarroo,

December %26amp; January is THE BEST TIME to be on the beach in Ngapali in Myanmar. The weather is like summer in UK with SUN! Perhaps a touch hotter, so do carry your sun-blockers! The weather is also perfect for the flights. Personally, 10 days or 2 weeks or a month, none is too much for myself. I do love to loll on the beach completely relaxing and enjoying the nature at its%26#39; unspoilt best being as it is in Myanmar. Yes I would agree 6-10 days there would be perfect!! Take a boat out to nearby islands. Snorkling is good. (Should I remind you both to come back at the end though?)

    Very Best wishes.

    Hi

I only have 15 days of vacation including flying time. I am planning on going into Yangon via BKK, on to Bagan, Inle and then ...... not sure yet. I wanted to do some down time at a beach in Myanmar but from what I read, it seems that they are more expensive than those found in Thailand. So......

I am ';stuck'; on the Inle portion. From my readings , people have suggested Taunggyi, Kakku, Indein, and Samka. But, I am not sure how long it would take ( in terms of actual car hours) to get to these places, and if they are really worth going to.

    I know this is a loaded question, and that it depends on tastes and individual preferences but I really want some honest opinions on any of the aforementioned places. I will shoot myself if I spend 4 hours in a car and think '; wow that really wasn%26#39;t worth it!';

    help needed for Myanmar trip

    Hi Bette,

Calculate: 3 days flying international air....with connection to Myanmar

the rest 12 days you can spend in Myanmar.

Calculate: 2 days each at Major 4 destinations which are Yangon, Bagan. Mandalay and Inle Lake.

You can extend one more day in Inle lake where you can do some unusual places such as Kakku and Indein.

The rest day you will spend 3 or 4 days at the beach doing nothing.

There are Hotels ranges 30 to 300. if you are looking for something simple there are Lin Tha Oo guest house., Silver Beach hotel. Ngapali beach hotel, Thande Beach hotels. they are on the net.

so, I hope you can have some pictures of your trip plan..

    Best regards,

    help needed for Myanmar trip

    Hi,

From USA I would calculate 2 days flying into and 2 days flying out of Myanmar. that leaves you with 11 days. What is it you wanted to do? Your plan indicates you want to rush around! Why not take it a bit easy? If you want a beach as well, why not focus on Yangon, Bagan and Ngapali or another beach nearer to Yangon called Ngwe Saung? My plan would be:

Day 1 - 2 To Yangon and arrival

    Day 3 - 4 See Yangon

    Day 5 -6-7 Bagan

    Day 8 - 9 10 Ngapali/Ngwe Saung (beach)

Day 11 12 Back in Yangon

Day 13 14 Return to USA

One day left ! You may need it with one or the other connecting flights

    Just a suggestion.

    Khayeethe

Oops! I just noticed your last paragraph.

Yangon to Ngwe Saung (beach) is by car/coach. it takes at least 5 hours on the road!

Travelling around Myanmar by road takes time! This apply especially if you are thinking of Inle, Taungyi etc.

Yangon - Bagan is a 50 minutes flight each way. Remember to take into account waiting times at the airport! They eat away time you hope to spend at each place.

    Khayeethe

    Quote: ';I am ';stuck'; on the Inle portion. From my readings , people have suggested Taunggyi, Kakku, Indein, and Samka. But, I am not sure how long it would take ( in terms of actual car hours) to get to these places, and if they are really worth going to.';

At Inle lake you simply arrange with a friendly boat man.. to take you on a daytrip.. start at 8 am.. and bring you home after sundown... cost is aroung USD 18.. to 20.. You can negotiate with him.. what you like to see and more importantly.. what you don%26#39;t want to be dragged to see..... Inle lake is (for us) one of the (many) highlights of Myanmar.

Flea markets, bazaars or flower maket in Yangon or Mandalay

    Hi everyone,

I hope this is not too silly a question to ask but I was wondering if there are flea/sunday markets, bazaars in Yangon or Mandalay?

Also, is there an area in these cities where there are vendors/shops selling plants and flowers native to Myanmar? Reason I asked is I need to get some photos of these related themes, especially for the flower/orchid markets.

Flea markets, bazaars or flower maket in Yangon or Mandalay

Main market in Yangon is ';scott'; market.. all new things... some intersting stuff.. but mainly cheap trinkets.. In Mandalay don%26#39;t bother with the night market.. very disapointing..

As for flowers.. I don%26#39;t remember seeing a flower market.. but I guess there must be one somewhere. Few people would probably have the spare money to buy flowers.. seems to me that food and veges are what people need and buy.

Flea markets, bazaars or flower maket in Yangon or Mandalay

Thanks for your reply. I%26#39;d read in some books that the Burmese people being staunch buddhist devotees, would present offerings of flowers to the Buddha during worship. I was wondering perhaps there would be a congregation of shops that sell flowers for this purpose.

Orchids in Myanmar are very beautiful. The reason for asking is to be able to capture pictures of some interesting species which are not commonly found. Hoping to try my luck with the flower markets if there are any.

Yes, correct... you do see the local people bring flowers to the temples.... compared to Singapore.. I did not think the flower displays were noteworthy.. but you might.

You%26#39;ll find flower market in Pyin Oo Lwin, small town not far from Mandalay (about 2-3 hours by car).

    Yangon to Bhamo

Hi. I need to fly from Yangon to Bhamo. Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Yangon to Bhamo

No flight to Bamaw, just road for car and especially the boat.and train hat you get of he station of Kathar and use the car to Bamaw.

From YGN to mandalay and take car or boat.

    welcome to Burma

    Yangon to Bhamo

    thanks for your help.

Air Mandalay and Bagan Air run occasional flights to Bhamo in October and November to collect passengers from the Pandaw and Road to Mandalay boats and they also sell spare seats to Mandalay and on to Yangon.

Look at the cruise schedules and if you speak to the operators you may be able to pick up a spare seat.

Two days in Bhamo is enough-but the are quite a few expedition trips you can organise including a boat up to the third defile.

  • burma - where do i start

looking for help with the following please; never been to Burma but think it looks so exotic and beautiful, would love to go but know absolutely nothing.

just a few quick questions for you -

    1. which city is a must see for beginners?

    2. is it best to fly into Bangkok , then which route?

    3. best time of year to visit?

    thankyou so much, shirley

burma - where do i start

The most popular places would be Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan and Inle Lake.

Cheapest way for most people is a return flight to Bangkok and the return with airasia Bangkok to Yangon..... Look also at Thai air flight direct to Yangon.. via Bangkok...

Or Qatar airways Non stop into Yangon.... You fly from London via Doha... very good rate.. and if you only wish to visit Myanmar.. probably the most easy and cheap ticket.. Kuwait airways fly into Bangkok.. (and on to Manila) at a competitive rate.

Best time would be November to late February.. it the coolest and driest time.. But some people enjoy what the call the gree season.. its hot and damp.. but you see it at a time when its green in the north.. fewer tourist around.. and cheaper rates in hotels and guest houses....

burma - where do i start

BTW... if you do wish to combine a visit to Myanmar with time in Thailand.. one option is to fly from Chiang Mai to Mandalay with Mandalay airways..... they are the only airline doing this flight and one of the very few options for getting into Myanmar without going through Yangon.. works only in the one direction.. Return is via Yangon... Mandalay air fly once per week... Thursday PM.. cost one way is around USD 120... Which is around the cost of a return ticket with airasia between Bangkok and Yangon.. (if you buy early and on-line).. but doing it this way saves ';back tracking'; within Myanmar.. bear in mind that road and train travel is slow and uncomfortable....

    Hello Mosegrisen,

Always good to read your valuable advice!

    Khayeethe

thankyou so much , you have been a great help, I am definately thinking of going next year and just needed a %26#39;starting block%26#39; and you have given me that, thanks again, shirley

thankyou so much , you have been a great help, I am definately thinking of going next year and just needed a %26#39;starting block%26#39; and you have given me that, thanks again, shirley

best time.. not to mention Yangon though as int%26#39; Port!

Mandalay, Bagan.. in Rainy reason .. heavily pour only in southern part of Burma, not in Upper Burma.. so .. come ..Aug, Sep.. price of Dom flgt also Low..

Better come to Yangon first.. because Ching Mai- Mdl.. flight is too small for you and take time..s Chingmai.. 3000 ft above sea

better come and see .. INLE Lake 2000 ft above sea.. but more beautiful.. with leg rowlers

Ready pack U%26#39;r bag and come NOW!

You%26#39;ll always be a NOVICE for everything first time..

be sure confirm you booking first.. with agents.. which is lower price.. for DLX hotels. not to mention 3 seasons HOTEL on 52 street. sometime you can%26#39;t get room. because it%26#39;s too small. But good!

Hope to see you in Myanmar very soon.

    Victor

Lots of good advice has been already given but if you really want your hand holding as a first visitor you can book inclusive tours direct from the UK - Bales , Coromondel , Audley Travel etc - worth getting their brochures which are well researched and full of good photos and hotel details.

  • Recommendations for a good hotel in Rangoon and Mandalay?

Hubby and I are looking for some where nice in both cities and would like to be within walking distance of major attractions.

Recommendations for a good hotel in Rangoon and Mandalay?

Both cities are covered reasonably well in www.5starmyanmar.com

I think the Mandalay Hill is pretty neat in Mandalay and the Governor%26#39;s Residence in Yangon is quite unique and a bit of history.

Recommendations for a good hotel in Rangoon and Mandalay?

    Hi Alicia01

Yangon (Rangoon): Traders%26#39; Hotel - very central; I will strongly recommend. Also the Grand Plaza on the same road about half a mile away. There is also the Thamada Hotel across the road from The Grand Plaza; but I am not familiar with it. All are within walking distance of the Bo Gyoke Market, the Sule Pagoda, the Bandoola Gardens and they Rangoon Jetty. If you are a keen walker, (and willing to get up early in the morning,) the Shwe Dagon Pagoda is about 30 - 45 minutes walk. Otherwise you%26#39;ll need a taxi. The reclining pagoda at the Chauk Htat Kyi and the Kaba Aye (World Peace) Pagoda - you will need the taxi. They are relatively cheap anyway.

Mandalay: I can recommend the Mandalay Swan Hotel wich is just across the road from the Mandalay Palace Walls. You can walk to the Palace; but I%26#39;d rather take a taxi. The Sedona is next to the Mandalay Swan. I have read recently on this forum about another well recommended hotel whci I can%26#39;t just recall immediately. You will still need transport for the Mandalay Hill, Ku Tho Daw and the Maha Muni (Payagyi) Pagoda). While you are in Mandalay you should try and get to Amarapura, U Bein Bridge and perhaps Sagaing and Innwa Me Nu Oke Kyaung.

    I hope this helps.

    Khayeethe

    Hi Alicia01,

I%26#39;ve just found the hotel in Mandalay, I mentioned earlier. In fact there are 2 well recommended ones the Mandalay View Inn and the Hotel by the Red Canal. check them out on page 3 of the current Myanmar forum.

    Khayeethe

The Hotel ';Red Canal'; is very nice.... same management as Mandalay view inn.... latter is actually a sort of budget place.. very central location close to the Sedona... Red Canal is a little isolated.. but exceptionally nice place.. run by wonderful staff....

Bear in mind that a taxi is only a dollar or two.

We (two senior ladies) just returned from Myanmar, was there July 13-29 . . . in Yangon, we stayed at the Central Hotel, just around the corner from Traders and across the street and down 2 blks from the Scott Market. The Central was like a nice Holiday Inn, 2 beds, mini bar, safe, big room, nice bathroom w/tub/shower but was only $30/night.

We stayed at the Mandalay View Inn in Mandalay, right around the corner from the Swan . . .even though it is ';budget'; . . . $28/night, we had a very nice stay there. Our room was narrow but long and we had everything we needed . . . a/c, tv, 2 beds, minibar, balcony, big bathroom w/tub/shower. The place was absolutely spotless and the staff were friendly and extremely helpful.

Taxis are cheap. The Green Elephant Restaurant in Mandalay is right around the corner from the Mandalay View and was the best place we ate in all of Myanmar . . . and we had some good meals. We just thought this place was outstanding.

I hope you have as good a time as we did. I typed up my travelog and would be happy to share . . . email me at behrens@unt.edu if interested.

    Happy travels,

    Sandy (in Denton)

    ';even though it is ';budget'; . . . $28/night';

LOL.. please don%26#39;t think it meant as a negative comment... I%26#39;m all for saving money when I travel... I merely meant it was cheaper than the Red Canal..... We went to several ';budget hotels'; in Myanmar and really enjoyed them and had actually booked at the Mandalay View Inn... we were just lucky to be moved to their new hotel just after it opened...

Visa to Myanmar with more than one entry and exit

Hello: I am planning a trip to Myanmar in November to visit my daughter who teaches there. I would like to travel throughout SE Asia but would use Yangon as my headquarters. Therefore, I would need a visa with more than one entry and exit. Is there a way to do that? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Visa to Myanmar with more than one entry and exit

This is carolynColorado again. Please correct my email address to:

    cjp4610@gmail.net. Sorry about the error!

Visa to Myanmar with more than one entry and exit

There may well be.. but I doubt that you would be able to get one... What you can get is several tourist visa... They are valid for entry for up to 3 months from date of issue... each will allow you a stay of up to 28 days....

Thank you for the response. I guess I%26#39;ll just have to get new visas each time I leave Myanmar so that I can enter again. Appreciate your input. Thanks very much!

My understanding is that you can arrange for more than one visum at the same time.. as long as the dates you need to enter are not more than 3 months away. And you may even be able to have the 3 month validation period extended.. given you special circumstances?.... My impression is that they are fairly eager to help.. if they can.. Why not contact the Myanmar embassy in the US?

Thanks so much for your response. I did contact the Myanmar Embassy in Washington and the lady I spoke to suggested that I just get a new visa each time I re-enter the country. I guess that is the best way. It does seem like a pain to re-apply each time but I%26#39;m at a loss as to a better way to do it. Inasmuch as I don%26#39;t know when I%26#39;ll be leaving Myanmar and returning I%26#39;ll just have to do it as I go along.

Thanks so much for your help though! I sincerely appreciate it.

    Carolyn

    You are very welcome.

It is the case that Myanmar is a bit more difficult vis a vis visa rules and limitations on how and where to enter the country.

Perhaps making Thailand your base in S. E. Asian and just doing a number of straight forward return trip to Yangon is a better option? Do remember that untill recently, only a 7 day visum was available for tourist...

2 weeks trip to myanmar and laos

I just came back from Myanmar not long ago. If you go, try to avoid the raining season. It%26#39;s about 4 months long. For the best route, take a non-stop flight to Bangkok, Thailand, then flight from Bangkok to Yangon with Air Asia (you can book online with airasia.com for 20USD) Most people travel to the popular cities like Mandalay, Inlet Lake, Yangon, and Bago. Great sites with lots of history. Be prepared for unbelievable temperatures or 40 degress celcius or higher. Book hotels online with 3 stars or higher for 30USD or more. Even 3 star hotels don%26#39;t have the ammenities we have in North America. A great place to check out would be the beaches. It%26#39;s about an 6 to 8 hour bus ride (cann%26#39;t book online, buy ticket at bus station) to either 3 or the nice beach. If you would like to see the not to tourist sights, check out Mawlamyine. As for the islands, theirs nothing special about them, just small ones close to the shores. If you want nice sight seeing islands, check out bangkok on your way out. And theirs not many adventures in myanmar besides hiking. I hope you didn%26#39;t think it%26#39;s a white water rafting adventures over there. People there and not really into ports like that. Be careful and try not to get ripped off by too much. If you don%26#39;t speak burmese, your will garentee to get scam a few bucks. Not a big deal to us, but it%26#39;s a lot of money to them. Besides some taxi drivers ripping you off, every Burmese people we met were very nice. I would suggest getting a translator. Very inexpensive. Currency rate should be 1usd=1200kyat. You can get it at most hotels or travel agency officies. Ony buy it in Yangon and get the cleam new smaller bills. Good luck and enjoy your trip. I%26#39;m planning on going there next year during their winter season which will still be 35c over there. Remember to get a visa which you can get from Myanmar tourist websites. It it%26#39;s mandatory. Give me a shout if you need more info.

opps, didn%26#39;t know i had that many spelling problems. my bad.

Keep in mind the winter weather in the highlands of both Laos and Myanmar, Luang Prabang and Inle Lake, for example, and take sweaters or easily packed thermal underwear. I remember my gratitude at finding an old-fashioned water bottle in my bed returning from dinner at a lake hotel! Otherwise winter is the perfect time to visit both countries.

    Hi,

You can either fly into Yangon from Bangkok, by Airasia, or from Singapore by Silkair. The latter being the slightly more expensive option. Myanmar is a beautiful country teeming with beautiful people. Getting ripped off or scammed is an essential part of travelling. How to get ripped off as little as possible is the education! Computers and cell phone access is few and far between. Learning the local lingo for P%26#39;s and Q%26#39;s is a great ice breaker. If you need a local travel agent/guide email Umyo at melite@myanmar.com.mm

Winter months are great times to visit...then again so is the rainy season as I thoroughly enjoyed getting drenched and pelted by huge raindrops...oohya!

Don%26#39;t talk about local politics...chin up..eyes down and you%26#39;ll fun!

    Michael Morbius

If you are from nyc you should contact with the agency that we went to Burma. It%26#39;s Myanmar Shalom. Great agency and very reliable. They have contact person in nyc so it%26#39;s convenience and can give you information/itinerary right away. their website is www.myanmarshalom.com

Hi, If you like to visit Myanmar you need at least 9 days to cover all major places Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan %26amp; Inle Lake. If you are interested in a first class trip and accommodation you can visit www.myanmartravelport.com.

    visa from UK

I have searched on this forum cant find any info on visas from UK. How long in advance do I need to apply to the embassy?

    visa from UK

During the low tourist season it may only take about one week... During their busy time.. expect it to take 2 to 3 weeks...

Visum is valid for entry for 3 months (from date of issue)... for a stay of up to 28 days.

    visa from UK

Never had it take longer than a week. Just send off your application with photos and cheque by recorded delivery and enclose a prepaid recorded delivery self addressed envelope and the system works.

If you are in town you can also drop off and collect from the Embassy in Mayfair.

I think it is 拢14 but check.

In Nyaung U I had (twice) my best meal in Myanmar. And it wasn%26#39;t in one of its famous restaurants.

Inside the town on the main Bagan-Nyaung U road just opposite Pan Cherry guesthouse (on the T-junction with a road to Shwezigon Pagoda) there is a little family owned restaurant called Myint Htet Myint. The wife is a great cook, the husband - a waiter- is nice as Burmese people are, and the way to serve the meal is wonderful (curries in little pots on the burning coals).

    Enjoy

  • So why did you first visit Myanmar?

We are always fascinated in travelers tales so we thought we would start this topic with our story.

My wife enjoys genealogy and in researching her father (who she never knew as a child) discovered he was with the British Army in Burma in WW11. Like many Commonwealth servicemen who fought in the campaign he never talked about it on his return.

He was in the REME attached to the West African Division in the 2nd Arakan campaign and their route was through Cox%26#39;s Bazaar , Akyab,Taungup,Prome and then on to recapture Rangoon.

I will now revert to Myanmar names!

My wife could never sleep on planes and therefore our travels were in Europe and the Middle East but Burma always beckoned.

Unsure of the hotels and infrastructure we first booked a ';Road to Mandalay ';cruise in January 1996 and have never looked back.

On our subsequent return trips we started by taking group tours but for many years now we have been traveling independently.

Our highlight was the Pandaw expedition cruise to Bhamo - a truly wonderful experience seeing the real Myanmar.

We have made some great Burmese friends and a group of us support a school for deprived children in the Karin enclave of Insien ,North Yangon %26amp; intend to register a charity to continue the support and to open a similar school in Bagan village.

Wish list - have traveled extensively but have not yet visit Mrauk-U or Mawlamyine and would love to do the Chindwin Expedition cruise.

    Politics, like everyone we abhor the Military Government and all it stands for - but as Margaret Thatcher famously said '; if you don`t like a country%26#39;s politics you wouldn%26#39;t even cross the Channel';

Also remember that Myanmar is in the sphere of influence of China. They are planning a rail link from the border near Bhamo to a new port at Sitwe , giving them access to the Indian Ocean.

That puts the US stance on ';democracy'; into perspective!

Myanmar is the most wonderful country with the nicest people you could ever wish to meet. Good hotels , good internal flights , great sites to visit and good beaches - get there whist it is mainly unspoilt. In 1996 Mandalay was mainly bikes.2001 motorbikes and 2006 Japanese and Korean 4x4%26#39;s !!!

So what inspired you to first visit Myanmar??

So why did you first visit Myanmar?

Haven%26#39;t really any good tales about my reason for visiting Myanmar... perhaps memories of reading about an exotic country in childhood.. Kipling etc. sowed a seed?

Just to add to your comment about a Chinese built railroad .. that also plans are afoot for upgrades to the ';Burma'; or ';Stanwell'; road linking Eastern India with China (Kunming) in an east westerly direction.. as well as a road from Bangladesh again east west... but for the ultimate benefit of Chinese products being shipped through Myanmar... Year 2015 will be the lynch year of a new asean alliance... perhaps it will also mean the end of an era for Myanmar... and hopefully the dawn of a new... for better or for worse?

    tour guide in bagan

I suggest that you arrange it through your hotel.. They tend to have people they work with and recommend... That way you have some guarantee that it will happen and that the person is suitable and also someone to complain to if something goes wrong.

Thanks for the input .We at least have a clear line of sight for our travelling plans.

We really like to look at most of the things mentioned.

Looks like it%26#39;s pretty interesting . Next any input on cost of flight -

Yangon - Bagan -Yangon and other travelling flights cost is again most welcome in assisting our travel plans.

    Rgds/Desmond

Internal flights cost from around USD 35.00 (short flights between Bagan, Mandalay and Heho) ..... Yangon to Bagan, Heho and Mandalay are in the USD 70.00 to USD 80.00 range.

I agree that you ought to do more than just sight seeing around the Yangon area.. some people enjoy the delta area and the Golden rock and Bago area is also a popular outing.

I truly like the Inle Lake area... something truly unusual and interesting.... But...... if I was going to Myanmar with such short time available... I would choose between Bagan (temples and more tempels) I really do think it is in the league with Angkor Wat.. if not more impressive... and much fewer tourists there.... but the Mandalay area too.... Not so much for Mandalay itself.. but for the ancient cities in the close surrounding area.... If I should choose, I think I would go for Mandalay if I could only choose one area (other than Yangon).

Not sure if you know this.. but you can fly into Mandalay direct from Chiang Mai (Mandalay Air _ Thursday PM flight (USD 119.00).

Roads in Myanmar are not so good.. so busses between the big cities are slow... as are the trains... If you want info on trains go to www.seat61.com other option is to book a guide with car for transport .. that way you get to see more places and are more independent.... I haven%26#39;t done this myself.. we used a combo of busses and planes.... safe journey!

October,(High season of travel in Burma).

there are for high season flight rates.

    YanGon to ManDaLay... (84$)

    YanGon-NYaung Oo...... (79$)

    YanGon to Heho.............. (79$)

    Nyaung Oo to ManDaLay.(36$)

    Nyaung to Heho................(56$)

    Heho to ManDaLay........... (36$)

    Yangon to Changmai........(78$)

    Chaing Mai to Yangon......(100$)

    Chaing Mai to Mandalay...(104$)

    so that will help you,

    happy and free

That%26#39;s really great with all the available options thrown in.

Thks for the help ...looks like we need to increase the number of days and made this holidays a more relaxing pace.

We are now considering to go for 8 nites and 9 days.

We are really grateful for all this input and now we have to work on the nitty gritty part of the travel details.

    Once again thks.

    Thai Air

I am going to Myanmar in Feb ....... I will be taking Thai Air as it%26#39;s a direct flight from NYC to BKK ...... and then, there is a ';close call'; connecting flight from BKK to Yangon .......the flight from NYC arrives in BKK at 4:45 PM ...... and my Yangon flight leaves at 6 PM ..

Believe it or not, it%26#39;s cheaper by 160 USD PP if i book JFK-BKK and then BKK to Yangon ........ under a separate ticket .....

I am going in February .........

But, one of the Trip Advisor contribultors commented on such a ';close call'; getting into Yangon ..... I started to think about it. If there is a snowstorm, and the NYC flgiht is delayed, and I have TWO SEPARATE tickets ....... I might miss the earlier connecting flight to Yangon ......... there is a later connecting flight to Yangon but the rep from Thai Air told me that they ( Thai Air) is under no obligation to honor anything ..... maybe if I have the direct ticket at $160 PP more..... they will honor it?

Does anyone have any experince with this?

Also, if I book two separate tickets, FROM THE SAME AIRLINE, do I have to get my bags off in BKK and then go back though ';some line'; to get onto my Yangon flight?

    Thanks

    Bette

    Thai Air

    Hi,

The scenario you described actually happened to me, although perhaps slghtly differently.

I was travelling to Yangon one early January. I had 3 sets of tickets, the first from Leeds, UK to London with BMI which is a Star Alliance Partner with Thai International. (The other two being the flight from London to Bangkok and then the third from Bangkok to Yangon) It is an internal flight in UK. My flight from Leeds was to leave at 06:55 hrs. in themorning arriving in London at 07:50 hrs. The flight from London to Bangkok was leaving at 09:50 hrs. On the day of the flight, there was fog at Leeds and 5 minutes to take off, the flight was cancelled! All the passengers with connecting flights were transported to London by coach which is a 5 hour trip. (Some took the chance to rush over to Manchester - a 2 hour trip by taxis). I was on the coach with the guarantee of a nights stay at the airport hotel in London and a connecting flight the next day. When we got to London, I just thought I%26#39;d try the Thai check in desk which had actually closed about 3 hours ago; but there were skeleton staff at the desks. I went up and spoke nicely about any chance of flying that day instead of the next.. Just my luck, my flight had actually been delayed due to the fog as well, so they contacted whoever and I was allowed through - late but still on the flight!

The next was actually in Thailand! we (I was travelling with 3 other friends) all read our tickets wrong! We were 15 hours late!!! We did rush to the nearest Thai Airways office as soon as we realised our error (luckily, one of us was suspicious of the extra day we shouldn%26#39;t have!!!). With profuse apologies explaining our error (we never denied our error or blamed Thai for the confusion) we were put on the next flight with no penalties!!!

If we ask about their rules, the airlines wil have to state their rules; but if we just go to the desk (taking a risjk though) and calmly explain what has happened, the check in staff have some discretion where it may be possible, I think.

However, I hope I wouldn%26#39;t have to chance it again. (We did got away very very lightly - and I would recommend Thai anytime)

    Khayeethe

    Thai Air

I agree with Khayeethe that Thai airways are tops when it comes to service and in getting people where they need to go. Actually I don’t think it will make much difference if you buy the journey as one or as two tickets.. As Khayeethe, I think they will do their best to get you on “the next available flight” no matter wht.

As for the transfer of baggage in Bangkok airport and not having to go through immigrationand enter Thailand .... My guess is that no matter if you have one or two tickets.. they will “book you through” at JFK when you check in for your BKK bound flight. However it is an important question... if you have to re-check in rather then just transfer.. you chances are even slimmer...

The crux of the matter really is if you experience a delay and miss your Yangon flight... I’m pretty sure they would honour your tickets no matter what.. The difference lies in that if you buy one ticket.. they will have to ';accommodate you”... if you miss your flight.. Feed you and put you up in a hotel until the can “ship” you out. If, on separate tickets... you are on your own....

    How about looking at alternatives?

Would it be worth your while spending a day or two in Bangkok?.. Resting up and doing some sightseeing?.. I can’t remember how little time you have in Myanmar.. From memory it’s short and you probably don’t want to do this.... so the next option is to look at different connections between Bangkok and Yangon.... such as “airasia” “airbagan” “bangkok air”... good luck.

If you are looking at alternative options... and unless you have a specific reason for using Thai and you don%26#39;t really care about Bangkok at a connection point... I haven%26#39;t looked into it.. but you may also want to look at which airlines actually connect between JFK and Yangon.... Pretty sure Korean air does... not sure about Japan air.. Singapore airlines use Silk between Singapore and Yangon. Cathay pacific might, Not sure about Eva air.... Don%26#39;t know about the Malaysian air connection between JFK and KUL.... but they do fly into Yangon.

Don%26#39;t wish to make it harder for you and confuse you... and i do think the non-stop flight between JFK and BKK sounds terrific.

I took your Thai non-stop flight JFK/BKK last winter en route to Luang Prabang only stayed overnight at the airport hotel and caught an early AM Lao flight. Keep in mind the new Bangkok airport is enormous, one of the largest shopping malls I%26#39;ve seen, and the feeder lines to places like Luang Prabang and Yangon (where I went a week later) are at the far fingers of the concourse well removed from the international gates even if you are traveling on the same airline. Also, February is a popular month for travel to these countries so do not count on avalable seats on a later flight if you miss your connection.

As the previous posts say , Thai will book your luggage straight through to Yangon . Also Thai have a code share flight with Myanmar International which leaves Bangkok later than your 18.00 hrs connection so Thai would put you on that if your inward flight is delayed.

I would confirm that Thai Int. are one of the best customer focused airlines and I would never dream of flying to Thailand with anyone but them - they have helped me out of a big problem , with efficiency and courtesy, on more than one occasion.

WOW.. after reading Khayeethe%26#39;s harrowing experience ..... I would die if that were me!

It only has to happen to you once .... and you never forget!

I have had my share of unpleasant vacation mishaps in Asia ....

I have flown Thai Air before and liked it ALOT ..... I would prefer to fly with them again and upgrade to premium economy.

BKK is an enormous airport ( haven%26#39;t been in 2 years) and I am not sure I want to worry about catching that slim connecting flight. They have a later one ( 2 1/2 hrs later) .... and while I don%26#39;t want to hang out at the airport after a 17 hr flight .... I think that this is the smarter move ....

I spoke to Thai Air and asked them about the ';what if'; scenario. The lady said that if I missed that connection, they are under no obligation to get me on the next flight out OR to put me up in the hotel overnight.

As usual, thanks for sharing your thoughts .... it helps me ';see things'; better ......

    Regards

    Bette

You mention that its been two years since you were at the Bangkok airport and that it is big....

Well, in the meantime they opened a new one.. (BKK.)... (the old one (Don Muang or DMK).. being used for some domestic flights).

The new bangkok airport (Suvarnabhumi) is also large.. can take 20 minutes or more to get from one end to the other.. It has both international and internal flight from the same terminal building. Separated by floors rather that separate terminals as in the old one.... Its about 500 meters long with 4 ';arms'; for the airbridges so its quite a walk if you have to criss cross the building.

I knew they were going to open a new Airport ........ but now it%26#39;s separated by FLOORS...... I will definately go on the later flight to RGN......

I can%26#39;t believe what i did before..... I booked two tickets Premium Economy COMING BACK ON THE WRONG DAY ..... I clicked the botton for my AMEX to pay and then I froze when I saw what appeared on the screen ......... because I didn%26#39;t want to come back on Feb 29..... I was leaving RGN on the 29th..... ( silent scream)

Thai isn%26#39;t opened on weekends .... and will probably be closed tommorrow due to the Labor Day holiday ..... I wonder if they will just adjust the date for me or do you think I will get hit with a fine?

I am sitting here ';beating myself up'; over such a stupid mistake ...... I was getting confused with leaving RGN 3/29 and coming out of BKK in the wee hours on 3/1........ :(((

Here I was trying to save money by booking two tickets and I probably cost myself a substantial fine.

I wouldn%26#39;t DARE have a close connection at the new BKK airport. It is huge and the gates for small planes to places like Yangon and Luang Prabang are the farthest. Now in my ninth decade I have resorted to wheelchairs at airports but even with this service it was a long haul last January when I had 3 connections there. That said, for those who shop it is a great mall for luxury goods!
